The tens of thousands of universes have merged. The disintegration of spiritual force led to the momentous collapse of the great Cultivation World, a mighty era that had endured through millions of years of history. In the wake of the large-scale invasion of the Wilderness, the Avalon of Five Elements has become the practitioners’ last stand.

After a thousand years, a lowly youth, who hailed from the Old Territory, toiled as a laborer for three years in the depths of the Wilderness. He then became an exception and obtained the opportunity to enter the Avalon Of Five Elements for further studies.

Bearing beast-like fighting capabilities and driven by the desire to take control of his life, the youth strived for greater strength and power. Little did he know that he would set off a majestic upheaval.

This is one of the best novels out there if I were to be completely honest. Unlike what most low rated reviews say about this novel having tons of tropes is not necessarily true. Heck it even goes off the conventional path of story writting and brings up its plot amazingly. The characters actually have personality and doesn't go along with majority of the tropes.

But I want to address the fact that most of the low rated reviews here have absolute bullsh*t reasons as to why they rated this novel... more>> so low. I can understand the info dumps which I agree with and also the fact that a lot of people don't tend to get along with novels with slow pacing but otherwise the infuriating reasoning these guys bring up just makes me want to smash my head into the screen.

Some guy said that this novel is full of tropes and referred to rrl novels such as Arcane Emperor and Everybody Loves Large Chest which rely on their friggin harem and fanservice to keep on the top charted with innumerable amount of tropes I can't even list. Heck, might as well say MGA is amazing in plot writting and should deserve no. 1 spot in vfdkr.spb.ru. <<less

I nearly did not read this series because of the artwork, so if you feel the same way then be assured and give this novel a try. This is a work by the author of "World of Cultivation." If you are familiar with that, then you would be familiar with the pacing and character development in this series and I would highly recommend it. If not, then read on.

The story's greatness lies in the pacing and character development. So many novels follow a generic formula:

1. MC is poor, MC is... more>> picked on by random village bully. MC trains to fight bully, finds a treasure and wins fight during a tournament. Bully's brother is then mad at MC, etc etc. Repeat sh*tty cycle of (insert random name) is randomly mad at MC and MC is then motivated to train forever.

In this novel, the characters have a background and a temperament fitting their background. There are side characters but they are fleshed out and are not random NPCs with a few lines never to be seen again. The humour is done really well and the world is slowly built as the MC explores it. The MC's body is a mystery and his cultivation techniques do not fit in the mold of the current era - so he has to find unconventional ways to improve himself. As of today, only 32 chapters have been translated but I highly recommend it. <<less

This novel is one of the most pretentious web novels I've read. The author has this strange theme of always choosing an underdog for an MC in his stories; an underdog that will fight all odds with his sweat and blood. Talent doesn't matter as long as you have a strong will and hardworking. Only, this is just an illusion to mask the excuses the author engineered such that the protagonist is actually lucky, has a somewhat convenient backdrop to excuse things that will happen in the future that will... more>> inevitably rise his level just because.

One might say, "Hey! That's just an aspect of the show. There are so many more novels that are worse than this. Why would you say that it is one of the most pretentious web novel?", or something close to that. Well, yeah. That's not the only reason why I said it is one of the most pretentious web novel I've read. There are actually two more reasons. The second one is that I have poor memory so I might have forgot other pretentious novels and has little to no novels to compare this novel's pretentiousness.

As for the last, it has something to do with how the author uses his characters. Most, if not all, of his characters are one dimensional. They lack real personality and only identified by some cliche characteristics. Furthermore, it feels rather annoying to me to use other characters for his comic relief and power-up of the MC. An example for the former is how he shows the MC having a good time while another character currently experiencing a bad time. It felt forced. It's like hearing the author say, "Hey, you should laugh in this scene." or something. An example for the latter, on the other hand, is in the recent scenes in recent chapters (I'm in c41) wherein the girl character was conveniently hungry, conveniently was not able to resist eating normal food even though she, according to the author, only eats elemental food all her life, conveniently ate at the same restaurant the MC went to, conveniently has no money with her, conveniently only has her very important bracelet with her to exchange things with, and so conveniently was linked to the MC in an earlier manner. But that's not the only convenience that we can see. We also have the MC to bring his sword to practice because the sand puppet conveniently asked a convenient question, and a convenient sword embryo, that will conveniently absorb the bracelet. And then we have the Duan guy that will conveniently show up, conveniently say some words that will conveniently anger the other two, that will conveniently make them attack him without mercy, and will conveniently be not physically fit to defend himself, that will conveniently awaken some sort of thing to the MC. So many conveniences. I know that shows can only be deemed interesting if conveniences to make interesting things happen appear. But with so many convenience? That's bad writing in my book.

Even though I say that they are convenient, it is still worth the praise for the author's part to engineer these things a few chapters in (the sword embryo thing). But that's the only worthy thing to be praised on his part since everything else is sh*t. Info dumps are quite plenty, especially when author tries to excuse the power-ups of MC, expecting the audience to believe that he's the only one who discovered such things in the span of more than a million years. Really stupid.

Excuse Scoring:

Writing Style: 5 (again, I'm a sucker at rating writing styles since I rarely read classic novels)
Story and Plot: 3 (no real story and plot at the moment. Just some "slice of life" for the mc)
Characters: 2 (most are depicted as 1-D characters to further author's agenda; not real enough for me)
Enjoyment: 5 (I skimmed through paragraphs to reduce my boredom and maximize my enjoyment)
Total: 3.75 = 3 = 1/5

(read my genius black belly miss for the explanation why it became 1/5) <<less

It's really an amazing novel.

I am ahead of the current translations, so this is my review till where I've read.

Sure, there are a few slow parts in the beginning, but when sh*t finally goes down, boy do we have an epic story. One thing that's amazing is the mystery. His cultivation's a mystery, the reason for the disaster is a mystery, and the world, at present, is a mystery. And, as in all Fang Xiang's novels, the relationships between the characters are fleshed out, realistic, and well described.

The humour adds... more>> much to the story as well.

As another reviewer said, it's easily one of the best novels on this site. Everyone's got to read it. And this isn't even mentioning the fast release rate and really good quality by the translators. The only reason for that abnormal peak of one stars must be because of the QI haters.

Seriously, read it. You won't be disappointed. <<less

[Read until chap 25.]:

lol.

It is really at the level of ‘World of Cultivation’, the other work of the author.

Great humor and great quality.

Although, at the beginning, the story is kind of slow and and the world-building confusing. Now it is getting to be a very enjoying read.

So i've been reading this story for a while now and seeing the unrealistically high ratings which will probably fool a lot of people (like I was). I think it's time for me to review this.

Having read non-wuxia/xianxia on RoyalRoad with amazing world building, almost 0 editing mistakes and interesting and very unique characters with actual character progression. (Everybody loves large chest, The Gam3, arcane emperor, and iron teeth are some I would recommend) I've been having a hard time getting back into the chinese novel scene because of the... more>> same flaws and errors most of their authors make.

Review starts here:

There is nothing even remotely original or 'good' about this story: The pacing is incredibly slow, and filled with regurgitated information dumps, and unnecessary monologues. There has been basically no character progression besides rising in power lvls, there are no relateable or interesting personalities, the world building is suboptimal, but to give it a plus, the author DOES try to atleast make a different cultivation system.

Tl:dr - The story suffers from the same flaws as most chinese webnovels: low quality writing/editing, unoriginality, unnecessary monologues and info dumps. Unrelateable 'cold and calculating' underdog MC, the same character tropes like in A LOT of other stories fx: The fat 'funny' friend, and the beautiful and strong (possible) love interest just to name a few. The story also suffers from 'dragging on the story to meet word count'-syndrome.

I would only give this a chance if you enjoy reading xianxia with poor quality, just to get your fix of the day. Or if you're like me and need a filler you don't have to invest too much into knowing you're gonna drop it at some point. <<less

FREAKING AMAZING. IF World of Cultivation and A Will Eternal had a baby, then this would be the result. Humorous misunderstandings and money grubber MC = highly enjoyable read. This novel is insanely good, highly recommended. Unfortunately, this is a SIDE project of Alyschu and will only be updated when she has free time (which is a rare occurrence since she has ATG, Spirit Realm, and various other projects). This is BY FAR my favorite out of all of Alyschu's projects. I am trying really hard to not read the... more>> machine translation because it will be great injustice to this brilliant novel. <<less

(My first review, whoo! I've finally made an account...)

I was sorta unsure whether I would want to continue reading it in the first few chapters, but it quickly caught my interest. It's been a while since I've found something as interesting as this. The author has a lot of other novels that I enjoyed too.

I'm sure other people have said this, but the characters feel real. Their interactions are also well-written. One of the mc's friends is different from what I feel is common in other novels.... more>>

Spoiler

It's Loulan, a Sand Golem, that I feel is super awesome. His interactions with the MC are awesome. Their first battle together... uwu I dunno, but I feel that he'll eventually die or something... it's just a feeling.

[collapse]

The irony in the story is funny. The fight scenes are detailed. More importantly, the setting is different from most cultivation novels. FWH is labeled as a sequel for WOC (brilliant novel, btw), and you can really understand why it is. Spiritual power went POOF, but they still have elemental power~~~ MC is also untalented, but he's innovative (the tag haha).

Spoiler

I could've sworn there was a reference to WOC too... Was it Wei Sheng who was briefly mentioned? Eh.

There isn't really any long term objective. It seems more of a slice of life than anything else. I barely see any real comedy, you may see some attempts but nothing special. I really don't get how people can give this 5 and that's why I had expectation for this but it's nothing great as what people are saying it out to be. MC joins a school..... yeh that's it really and how he lives his life day to day. No real enemies, no revenge plot. Just school life and... more>> how he cultivates. The school is the name of the title so most probably won't be an adventure <<less

Eh, reading this was quite interesting. Only 10 chapters in at the moment yet my interest was peaked. Like World of Cultivation (another story by the same author), Five Way Heaven is about a person who seems to have a hand in every little thing. Five Way Heavens seems to be the most recent Fang Xiang story at the moment with less than 200 chapters and constant releases.

The focus of the world’s cultivation arts is in Five Elements which is different from the past. Since spiritual energy has dissipated, the... more>> old style of swords and other cultivation methods fell while the Five Elements method began their rise. Our MC has some knowledge of Sword Cultivation but understands it’s useless due to the current state of the world and is now hoping to increase his understanding of the Five Elements.

Other than that, you have maybe 3 areas. Old Earth which I assume is the dregs and mortal areas of the world. The Savage Territories which, even in the past, had ferocious beasts, savage tribes, and very low spiritual energy. And the Five Way Heaven which is the high-tiered cultivation world and a place everyone in Old Earth wishes to go. Our MC was a person of Old Earth and spent 3 years in the Savage Territories as a high-risk, high-reward slave-servant. Making use of the money and the opportunity provided by the excursion, he moves to the Induction Ground to learn and increase his standing in life.

While there may be some parts where you see a bit of Zuo Mo’s desire for money, the story’s focus doesn’t seem to be greed.

And for people wondering why I made this and WoC as a “shared universe”...

Spoiler

In the distant cultivation era, that was when the ten thousand cultivation worlds had not yet merged. In a little sect called the Voidless Sword Clan, there was sword cultivating disciple named Wei Sheng. He had mediocre talent but his final achievements were very high, and he looked down on his competitors.

[collapse]
If you didn’t know, the Wu Kong Sword Clan was basically Voidless or close to that... <<less

Amazing. Good pacing, world makes sense, characters are humourous. Never heard of this story before, read it all in one sitting. Easily in the top 10 stories on this site, maybe even top 5 but it would be crowded. Read this story, there is no excuse. It's not overly serious, it's not overly comical. It's not overly ATG-like (if that makes sense). Reminds me a lot of God of Thunder and Instant Kill, those two are also really good.

This needs to be picked up again, it's so good.

Amazing novel, it felt a bit slow for the first 10 ch or so, but then it started to pick up and became something amazing. It has alot of potential and overall really well written. The translator Has done a great job of tralslating and the story flows really well, had no problems reading it at all.

Only big problem I see is that the novel isnt being given enough attention by the translator and is being translated at a snails pace. Dont get me wrong the translator does an amazing... more>> job at translating but it takes a month for each chapter to come out.

Edit: At "ch 42" The translation has finally picked up, which is really nice to see. As long as it doesnt go the harem route or slows down its going to be a great novel for me at least.

Tbh, although ppl say the early parts were comparatively boring, I find them much enjeyable to read than the arc where I'm at. Back then, I pretty much put this novel on par on Ze Tian Ji, although I kinda take that back now. Both of them are slow paced, but at least in Ze Tian Ji, chapters were longer so it can get away with paragraphs of infodump. In here tho, specifically on recent chapters, battles are long winded and boring. It really can't be compared to ZTJ's heart... more>> stopping battles. The fact that author adds in fillers doesn't really help much in making it better, altho I have to say those fillers were more interesting than the actual battles. There were a lot of things I was disappointed, which I'll be going to list down some of them.

Spoiler

What disappointed me the most was how the MC still ended up getting trapped in the deus ex machina powerups despite showing promise early on with him training the hard way and all. I thought he was going to get OP by using his ingenious training methods. Welp author goes screw that, Imma give the MC all these impossible things multiple times in a row. I'm to blame for getting my hopes up.

The rivalry part was pretty cool. There were lots of geniuses stronger than the MC. It was showing how the MC is not the strongest person in his age and that was really my jam. But then the author gives ridiculous powerups to the MC. He just somehow catches up to these geniuses in a matter of month. I guess I am to blame for getting my hopes up on this one too. I'm just tired of this MC is the strongest thing. I was kinda hoping for MC being very exceptional because of his experience while still being weaker in other areas.

The romance.... Well, I mean it's not bad but... That's that, it's just not bad. I mean I shouldn't be complaining, but the author spends so much time on her, but I'm just not interested in her. I find the embroidery seinor more attractive in aal honesty. I mean like, the girl is starting to like the MC because oh he's so strong and dependable and mysterious. Like, it's just not interesting. Idk, there might still be chance that she won't be the main heroine, but I doubt it.

It was highly, and I mean very highly, stressed out that it's very hard to revive swordsmanship because of reasons. But then the MC can do it because he has like what, a sword embryo? Like has no one seriously thought of that before? It's been thousands of years, but no one thought of it? It's kinda ridiculous. You can spout paragraphs of reasoning to refute my statement, but you can't say it's not ridiculous.

Plot convenience is way too strong. Any strong points of the MC can just be shrugged off as he's been to this Wilderness we've never seen before, it's starting to get on my nerves. Like, the author is making out the Wilderness as this very dangerous area to the point of questioning how the MC even survived in the first place, it's ridiculous. I've read the line "I've seen much worse in the Wilderness" so many times it's sickening. Wilderness bullsh*t out of the way, there are still a lot more plot convenience. He happens to help this very OP sand puppet with a master that just happens to be very old. You can guess what happens next. He needed money and this training hall just happens to be having a competition for the heroine (same girl above) who happened to be on that city that day and the she happens to be wearing those restraining stuff and gets beaten by MC and I forgot to mention it was awas blind battle so she couldn't see his face. Later on they magically meet each other on a noodle shop and some stuff happens and then sse asks for him to look for the guy that beat her, which was the MC. I mean, like, that's some multi-layered bullsh*t there, maybe they're fated for each other after all. He happens to receive this blood bandage something which was an OP item his mistress gave him. And then an apocalypse happens and blood fiends start appearing and it happens to be their outing. And then his bandage happens to counter these blood fiends. There's so much more, this novel can't progress without having coincidences every 10 chapter, which is mostly where something is happening. Nothing happens without coincidences.

The adults are way too irresponsible. It's like pokemon, they just let the kids be on their own. I can't be bothered to give an example tbh.

[collapse]

Now after all that rant, you might think I'd say that you shouldn't read this novel. I won't. Because even though it has many flaws, it has its redeeming factors.

Spoiler

Altho I made it ssound like it glaring flaws, you actually won't notice them if you don't think hard on it. I only noticed it now that I'm writing this really. The mood is sometimes comedic, so it can actually get away with the ridiculous plot convenience.

All of the characters are well fleshed out and relevant. They don't have just a one time appearance and then disappear. I like this bit about it.

I really appreciate the the fact that relevant people do die in this novel, and that the author portrays it really well.

[collapse]

Probably a lot more things to say, but I'm kinda tired now. Conclusion is:

Is this novel perfect? No, not at all. Ze Tian Ji is definitely a better alternative to this novel. Don't expect this to be flawless.

Should you give it a try? Yes, you should give it a try. I know I complained about the part where the heroine meets the MC in a blind battle, but that's what actually got me interested in the novel. You should read it up till there first before deciding to continue or not. This was actually mm second attempt at reading because first time I tried, I got bored by the first 3 chapters. It picks up from there on. <<less

Read up to chapter 8 but god this MC is a pretty dumb pushover. He gladly allows his "friend", who is not at all sorry, steal all of his money with NO repercussions. Then, he proceeds to spend the next couple days weak from not being able to afford food and taking a sh*tty paying job to make money? Why did he allow his friend take all his money then? Good character development, motivations and pacing, rare traits in novels these days. The MC's OPness is well restrained and believable enough in the context of the story, no nonsensical superpowers that came out of nowhere just to make him the best at everything, he has to actually work for it and the end result isn't excessive. Characters also have personalities and lives, they don't feel like one dimensional faceless fodder, although there are many cliche moments, its still bearable.

Not entirely flawless, but there aren't many better novels.

Hopefully this doesn't go... more>> the way of the author's previous work, world of cultivation, and turn into a horrible mess in the later chapters. This has started out even better than WoD, so I'm holding out hope. <<less

It bothers me that the elemental cultivation, which has a 10000-years-old foundation, is surpassed by the martial musings of a teenager, supposedly untalented. Sword embryo, such a cliche...

Just how on earth did people survive for so long with such an inefficient method of cultivation?

Well, as far as xianxia goes, this one is awesome.

3.5 - Real Score

Pros: Starts off with real promise and fresh ideas. The author also does a decent job with character depth.

Cons: The author constantly writes long pointless narrations and descriptions (after c70) . He'll write a few paragraphs about a city or character in a chapter, just to never mention or kill off what he wrote two chapters down. Additionally, his ultra long descriptions of world mechanics will drive you crazy making you have to skip half the chapter. -Annoying! Move the plot!

The story of a enthusiastic hardcore man that wishes to take control of his own life, others might call him money grubbing, I however just call him poor. The MC cultivates with a lack of talent, but has rich combat experience and a unique sword embryo that he cultivated, which allowed him to survive in the harsh environments that gave him combat experience. The only true complaints I have with this novel is that the author REPEATEDLY repeats the same thing over and over again and that the author spends... more>> a lot of time explaining through words not actions, as in he will literally explain to use with 9 paragraphs worth of text how embroidery is useful for combat, however at that time the MC isn't even nearby and it is being explained in the pov of a different character, meaning we learn this but the MC doesn't, yet he knows it already when he is back on the pov. It makes no sense and really detracts from the story. <<less

A short summary so far: In a relatively peaceful world, a young, battle-hardened protagonist enters an easygoing academy for cultivators. This leisurely life continues for only a short while until a catastrophe befalls the world and the academy becomes a place where everyone must struggle to survive.

This novel is very well written. It starts off like World of Cultivation but now is closer to Terror Infinity with well written thriller/horror aspects.

Amazing novel. The author make an amazing world building. The plot is good and so far not forced. The MC is very likable in my opinion and so far the side character also good. This really amazing and unique story!

Though I admit the first few chapters is kinda boring but if you continue to read this novel, I'm sure your opinion would change.
