Amamiya Hiroto is unlucky. His life consisted of misfortune after misfortune, culminating in an unlucky death during an incident on a school boat trip, trying to save a girl he barely knew. After death, he met a god of reincarnation who requested that the hundred or so dead passengers—one of them being the girl he tried in vain to save—be reincarnated into another world.

Yet a series of unfortunate events forced Hiroto to reincarnate with even less luck than before, starting with nothing but a tremendous amount of Mana. His second life, far worse than his first, came to a cruel end.

However, upon meeting the god a second time, he was informed that there would be yet another reincarnation—one that had already been set in motion and could not be stopped. Not wanting Hiroto to live long, the god cursed him before he was reborn in the hopes that he would either die quickly or commit suicide.

Hiroto was reborn once more as a half-Vampire, half-Dark Elf. A Dhampir. Not wanting a fourth life, he is determined to live this third life with the only things remaining from his previous lives—death-attribute magic and his enormous Mana pool.

Death Mage is something of a guilty pleasure of mine. It's one of my favorite novels at the moment even if I feel it has a lot of rough spots. As it's incomplete at the moment I feel it's difficult for me to craft a proper review, so a lot of this will be stream of consciousness writing, and might be a little unstructured.

The main appeal of this novel, to me at least, is Van's aesthetic and powers. He is precisely what the novel's title implies, a death mage. Perhaps... more>> more familiar a term would be something like "Necromancer." He's commonly described as a small, pale white child with red eyes and white hair and no facial expressions, as well as being described as doll-like. A half Dark Elf, half Vampire child with an emotionless, monotone way of speaking and low presence. He's the embodiment of the whole "creepy vampire child" aesthetic. A thing worth noting is that while he is in fact overpowered, he's overpowered not in the sense of "he instantly is good at everything because he's perfect, like a Mary Sue, " but more that he has a specialty in a type of magic not seen before and the specific specs to use them to their full potential. Death Magic and Golem Control (which later extends to basically anything inanimate, which is incredibly overpowered because he can basically terraform anything and command fields to walk where he wants them to, for instance, and that's just a fraction of what he can do) generally require a high amount of Mana, making what are really powerful abilities generally impractical to use by normal people. One of Van's only cheats happens to be a ridiculously high Mana count and regeneration rate. He's overpowered in the sense that he's just the best in the world at doing those two specific things. Animating objects and materials, death magic, and control of the undead. Physical combat and durability is something he lacks, meaning if people get close and he doesn't have a barrier up he's as vulnerable as a small child would typically be. I, personally, and this is a bias, I'll be the first to admit, really love dark magic/necromancy/hexing type classes in RPGs and if I were to create an Isekai around a necromancer type character this might be pretty close to what I'd think up. "You have three curses and two perks to pick up to create your character." Kinda like that.

With talking about Van out of the way, this novel previously had a Tragedy tag attached to it but recently I've opted along with others to remove it because it doesn't quite fit, in spite of the very dark and f**ked up prologue and set-up Van's backstory consists of. Tragedy is something generally associated with a constant feeling of dread or melancholy, tragic events, and the like. The depressing kind of read you go to to get f**ked up. The meat of Death Mage's story is mostly Van building his army and a nation of monsters and trying to obtain the happiness that he didn't have in his prior two lives. It's pretty casual a lot of the times and there's little pressure nor any sense of dread to speak of. In a sense it kind of developed somewhat into what Tensei Slime did, with the whole nation of monsters and building it up, except what they seek is not necessarily co-existence with everyone, but with those who choose to ally with them. They are the natural enemy of humanity at this point in the story, and Van shows no indications whatsoever of wanting to get along with humankind on a universal level. Van is very much like a Demon King building up his nation and protecting themselves from humanity, rather than waging a war. The first few chapters will cover Van's backstory, and I feel it's kind of a waste of space to discuss this here. It's self-explanatory when you read it, and I feel a plausible backstory that doesn't feel too outlandish in how it shaped an ordinary, yet unfortunate High Schooler into the emotionless child he's become.

Now, on to some negatives. Like I mentioned at the beginning of this review, I have some major gripes with the story. Specifically the writing. A major problem the author has is he explains way too much sh*t and never leaves anything up to reader interpretation. It's like he has no confidence in his writing getting across everything he wants it to, and he wants to get out every plot point and twist as soon as he can. There's no real usage of foreshadowing and if there ever is a question of what's going on in two character's minds, the author will without hesitation explain EXACTLY what they are thinking. I can't speculate anything or discuss what conspiracies may be going on behind the scenes because the author seems intent on destroying any mystery the moment it rears its face. It's incredibly frustrating.

Another thing I have somewhat of an issue with, although this is subjective on my part, it's that Van has an always active Death Attribute Charm which applies to his companions and suboordinates at all times. I can't help but stop and think sometimes about how heavily the people surrounding him might have been influenced by the skill. It's debatable how much the skill affects the thought process of the people around him -- it seems like it just affects people's perception of Van and making it generally positive, and it's not as strong as hypnotism or the like, but I can't feel perfectly fine with these interactions just because of the existence of this skill.

Overall this is actually a pretty nice read. I personally love it, and read new chapters whenever they come out. I hope it gets good adaptations and the treatment I feel it deserves, and if you don't mind the overpowered Isekai protagonist type of deal, and want to see one revolving around not a "good at everything" type of protagonist, but a necromancy/alchemy-focused protagonist, then give this a shot. It's what has me so enamored for the most part. Perhaps it'll scratch that itch for you. <<less

Story is good, but for a character that had 2 horrible life before he is still too soft and naive. He doesn't learn from any of his misfortune and has a lot of flaws. He is leaving behind trails and clues everywhere. Another thing is his weird opinion of how to survive. First he was full of hatred and want to kill those 100 heroes and that God, then he turn cowardly and decided to prevent them try to kill him by using logic to reason with them. I have... more>> no problem with him letting go of his hatred and live a good life, but his thinking is retarded. He actually plan to become a noble in society while make sure the human countries doesn't hate him by not breaking the law. Then calmly hunt monster, criminals and bandits. Naive! He live in a world where basically humans are racist against all demi-humans and monsters. Slavery is largely active. There exist a fanatics church and his own kind (vampire) want him dead. Why the hell would he want to try to mix into human society. He is now basically a king among the ghouls and possess a whole city. Instead of trying to hide from society, grow up and amass a large army, he instead want to be a freaking adventurer and have a status to make the heroes no longer be able to kill him. The adventurer guild is more likely to kill him first for being a mix vampire. He is a kid. Cut the root before it grow.

He should just get stronger, create a nation and become stronger than the heroes. That is the best way to survive. Strength is the law. Without it, any law and rules is crap. No nation or guild can offer 100% safety. Only power. <<less

After reading up to chapter 9, there are some things that I do not really like. The novelty wears off pretty quickly and then you're just left with a frankly boring plot with mediocre, uninspired writing. That's right, a story about a necromancer can somehow be boring. Read the story to find out how.

Let's start with the premise of the story. The entire thing is caused by a God making a mistake by giving MC's powers to some other guy just because their names sounded kind of similar. Really?... more>> A God with divine powers being that incompetent? Sorry, but literally any other backstory would have made more sense. And then after the God realized his mistakes, he made the most half-assed attempt to fix it, resulting in the ridiculously contrived situation that the MC found himself in at the start of the story.

I felt that the MC's mom getting

raped and murdered

didn't really do anything for the plot. The MC had already gone through much worse, so it's not like he's learning about how cruel humans can be - he already knows that. So I feel like it didn't really add anything to the story.

The MC tells himself not to take revenge for his mom because that would expose his existence and attract more powerful enemies - so, you'd think, if attracting attention is the main concern, then maybe take revenge more discretely would be a good idea.

What does he do? He makes golems out of all the walls and homes of everyone who lives in the city, whilst leaving the mayor and people who tortured his mom totally unharmed. So what does this achieve? 1. It's flashy and attracts lots of attention. 2. It doesn't actually harm those who he wanted to get revenge on. So basically the worst possible decision he could have made.

If he was so scared about attracting attention then he should have just left the city alone, and if he wanted revenge so badly then he could have just gone and killed the mayor and the torturers. Instead he does the complete opposite - attracts attention AND fails to avenge his mom. Just genius.

He also has some OP skills that he almost never uses - mind control of the dead for example, meaning whenever someone dies their souls become mind controlled by him and he can get to know everything they knew. So far he has only used this ability like once or twice, when he could have juiced every soul he came across for all their information. Again, doesn't seem very pragmatic of him.

All the characters up to chapter 9 have been just puppets of the MC. The only independently minded character to begin with was his mom, until she died and became his puppet. His only companions are walking skeletons and dead souls, who are mind controlled by him and do not have independent wills - his servants basically. Reading their travels is like reading about a kid playing with his toy soldiers. Very boring and repetitive - skeleton man kills a bandit, bone bear kills a goblin, etc.

I don't know how you can manage to make a story like this boring but this author has managed to do it. Kudos to him I guess. <<less

Honestly this story could become a masterpiece but failed midway, because Author turned vengeful MC into a typical kind Isekai MC. He even didn't kill the townspeople that burned his mother and laugh at her, MC only destroyed their home, what a good natured and kind person.

The author wasted MC personality that he had build since the beginning, and I though he is going for massacre according to the flow of the story and his personality, but no! author want a kind, caring Isekai MC, and so here you go...

Sooo good, I'm loving this so far. The translation itself is excellent and we've got an interesting MC who's a decent person with an understandable, non-edgelord-y reason for wanting revenge. I like his approach to his new life (including planning to not hide his life pre-reincarnation) and I look forward to seeing how things pan out!

Same old reincarnation theme but with a really great plot. Even though it's early this novel seems like it's gonna be really good.

Translation quality is 10/10.
Plot so far is 10/10.
World building so far 10/10 (I already have a general idea of the people and the mentality of the world he was transported to.)

I was really mistaken when I read this, I thought it'd be another "transported to another world comedy" with cheesy subpar action and a inept protagonist. Glad I decided to read it. The... more>> protagonist, is screwed over a lot, you'll de finely understand his motivation for revenge. Original life was crap, second life was 100 times worse, and his third life, when he reconsiders his revenge, it's flipped upside down but now he has the power to retaliate. <<less

I previously gave this a 5 star but I was mistaken greatly. Story started with strong revenge plot but then took 180 degree dive. Like usual MC is your typical goody two shoes shining knight. Goes the whole approach of revenge plot introduced us through 2 lives of pain and suffering into your usual harem plot. Its like the past event didn't even happen. You would think when a person suffer so much that they would be little ruthless or cold but nope. He is caring and kind. Not saying... more>> he shouldn't be but when You introduce a character who has a f**ked up life and doesn't show us through his personality then why even bother writing it?

Also whenever I think about this novel I always imagine how author swindled me into reading this novel and giving it 5 stars due to that beginning plot. This novel isn't a revenge line plot but a go around the world searching for beautiful chicks to pick around kinda novel with no goal what so ever. <<less

The prolouge is very promising with all the revenge flags. But it turned into a *fuwa fuwa* kind after the death of his mother.

I was expecting something serious from him, while keep being cool and sane but still ruthless, I was expecting that. He turned soft and likely to forgive easily.

The flow is slow and too many unneccessary talks with "harem" tag.

I know he still has a lot of hardships to deal with in the future, but I dont like this MC, it looks like author strayed from the way... more>> he should have been. <<less

This is a hidden gem of a novel (at least so far).

You have a severely unlucky protagonist get passed over in more ways than one... which results in unspeakably tragic results.

If you want fun, light hearted banter or comedy get read Everyone Else is a Returnee, (which is fantastic btw) but if you want the darker side of being passed over when God is handing out the blessings read this instead.

Chapter 7 made me decide to write a review for this novel. If you're taking a shot at reading this novel, I suggest making it to Chapter 7, the chapter of revenge. The results are quite unexpected, and there is something thought provoking about it.

Originally going into the novel, I was expecting something like a mindless blood-fest type of revenge. But this is not the case at all. For the most part, the main character is level-headed, strategical, and methodical about extracting revenge. He thinks about what he wants,... more>> and is resolute in his decision making. Although at times his mind is a bit warped, that much is to be expected given the premise of the story.

Although there is exactly 0 of it yet, this novel does have the tags of harem, "comedy" and ecchi; I greatly hope it does not go downhill because of that, like sadly most do. <<less

Well I read till chapter 50 and this is what I have to say:

I should say that this novel is very different from your usual isekai novels and if you get really tired of those stories this one can entertain you for a while.

Chapters are long and you are free from almost all of the bullsh*ts of isekai stories. World building is also good.

... more>> But as I said, Almost.

This story have a lot of faults too.

First, you can see a lot of cliches things like everyone speech Japanese, which is truly on my nerve but author somehow justify why. Well we can ignore it.

What was really on my nerve was that author try to said Japan's food is the best and spend around 10 chapters (at this point I drop this novel so I don't know if its continue or nor) telling about awesomeness of Japan's food and how he reproduce it in another world. I won't go in detail like how the hell they found the exact same ingredients in another world when you can't find then in the countries near Japan.

Second, author like to push as much heroines as he can into MC. You can see every single woman that MC see is a beauty that somehow fall in love with MC or want to have baby with him. I should remind you that some of them fall in love for a 1 year old infant AND now he is 3. '-'

Author don't even lets a corpse of beautiful woman pass by and somehow revive her to add her in harem.

Third, Mc's act like a brainless bug. You may find it ridiculous but he have no brain even thought he move around.

Why? Cause a lot of his actions prove he don't have a brain. In the spoilers bellow I mention one of them:

He want to avoid attentions but decide to makes the walls of a town into golems and attract the attentions of the whole empire. '-'

Think about it killing people who rape and torture your mother and then born it leaves any mark about you or let all of them alive and do something as flashy as turning the wall of the town into golems and let everybody watch it?

Forth, There is absolutely no character development and all of the characters are like puppets. At the first chapter author explain how MC hate every so call heroes and want to all of them, have extreme hater for humanity and want to massacre all of them and the next chapter he is thinking about peace and... the reason is because his mother love him. The same mother that got raped, tortured and burn by the humans.

And the mother with everything happened to her is a happy-go-lucky person. '-'

Fifth one is that author have a really strange fetish for piercing. And he show it with piercing woman's tongue and belly. '-'

If you ignores above faults its a good novel to read. ^-^ <<less

The story isn't bad, it's just that the author makes the MC contradict himself a lot. The MC shouts at god after his death about how he's going to massacre the heroes for not even trying to help him and instead they just killed him outright, and how he's going to kill god for being an arse, then his mother dies and his revenge is destroying some buildings lol. Then, he decides not to actually take revenge on the heroes because he's too weak with his enormous mana pool that surpasses all the heroes and his op death magic.... seriously?

Where did his threats to god go?! Where is the real mc?

Wasted character development at the start is wasted.

This is perhaps the worst premise for a revenge-seeking protagonist ever. The protagonist has always been unfortunate and acknowledges that he had no friends or close people. He dies and the God makes a mistake so he has another crappy life where he ends up as a horrifying zombie creature with death magic. So he decides to get revenge on them because they "forgot" about him (they barely knew him anyways) and thought he was a monster? The God is the biggest target here, the classmates are hardly at fault.... more>> But in a way, the God is only curisng him because he turned so revenge obsessed. Also, while the character isn't right now, half-darkelf, half vampire, with death magic screams of edgelord later. But when you want to fulfill your revenge fantasy story, I guess its good enough. Gave it a three due to a potentially interesting world and the character planning on exposing his secret which is different. <<less

It has started with a nice motivation: MC life was sh*t, scum incompetent bug god reincarnated him into a even sh*ttier one, MC suffered hell for 10 years, then was killed by the one who got every blessing that must have been his, reunites with said bug god, promises to get his revenge on everyone including him, gets cursed by bug god to have a sh*ttier life to die quickly and be reincarnated/wiped out on the fourth and final time, MC promises he'll live to get his revenge on bug... more>> god and the 100 others reincarnators, only to some chapters later the the MC be mellowed down in his third time, and fail to get his revenge at the village who burned his mother, and then proceeds to become as incompetent as possible...

It was because of novels like this that I got to know xianxia stories, to quench my thirst of good efficient ruthless revenge driven MCs who promises revenge and do it in the most glorious of ways if you ever cross their bottom line a single time.

Why, I ask, why you write a MC only to suffer, you write his life as complete hell on heart, make him vow a edgelord revenge promise, only to throw all that world and character building in the trash chapters later, denying his right for vengeance by means of generic sh*tty harem rom-com slice of life writing? Worse yet is when you write then finally getting their revenge, only to forgive the scum and say that classic "i can be better than you", then let the scum live, even if said scum killed everyone that the MC cherished... <<less

I LOVE this series <3

The first 1-2 chapters are a little slow and a bit dull but it cant be avoided since it is the intro into the situation and world

MC is both OP and really weak, which is to say depending on how he uses his abilities he can be weak or strong, and I think the restrictions put on him as an individual make it all the more interesting to see how he will grow

All the characters are unique and very original, there are some stereotypes but they... more>> are in the right place and well executed

Battles are getting better and better

The general plot is very interesting and original, it has a lot of room to be expanded and it has a clear goal which means it will be hard for the purpose and direction of the story to be lost

Power levels are clearly defined from the start and are easy to understand and track

all in all

    • This novel is pretty good. Its really awesome. Tho some ppl are complaining that the MC became a typical, kind MC, I dont think thats really that bad. It isnt that he just randomly becomes kind, he becomes kind because of his mother.
    • u can read the spoiler part if uve read till ch 10~15 or something
    • Spoiler

and well, as for why he exacted revenge as only destroying some buildings, I can give an explanation on that. First of all, he will exact revenge on the ppl that killed her (The Priest, The Party, the baron etc) but atm he didnt have the power to do so. And as for why he didnt Massacre the towns ppl, there are a few reasons for that, the first is that, due to the love his mother showed him, his desire for revenge and mental darkness had subsided (a lot) which I personally think is pretty heart warming and logical considering how both his previous lives were. So, he really didnt want to kill innocent kids and ppl. The second is that he can revive his mother anyway so killing only those involved is good enough (dark enough?) in my opinion. Besides, if he really killed innocent people, the hundred cheaters will probably not leave him alone in the future and wont believe in him (believe it!). And from what I can tell, from the start, the author wanted the MC to become something like that. Like from a dark MC to a pure MC, kind of original imo. And the setting he chose, him forgiving the cheaters (who he hated unfairly, considering they didnt know anything, he should just hate that god) due to his mothers lovs really heartwarming and just lovable

    • He also turns out to be pretty awesome so u should really give this series a go.
    • Plus the series becomes really interesting later on. ;)

First of all, Every chapter = 2-3 normal chapters so currently its like they have 18ch. Its been an amazing read so far, it has a very interesting revenge plot, is translated really well, and it feels very unique.

Edit: CH 8. Welp.. The genre suddenly changed to ecchi and harem, it is a awesome novel translated by amazing people, but I just dont read this genre of novel..

Long chapters and we love those, I hope the Translator wont pass out.

first few chapters are a bit dark and down at the bottom. 14 chapters in the story (ghoul nest) starts to pace itself and slow down the tempo without inpacting the quality.

i also saw that the author has started some world building lore and behind the sceens puppetmasters, indicating the world is more "alive" than the usuall WN.

MC being a bit op is still not making him brezze over the setting. For I can say now he will... more>> forever be enemy og someone or something in the grand sceme of things, not like the usuall OP MC that are just bumming arround picking up slaves like a hobby.

this novel is not up to but getting there, to the standard of fine novels like "the girl who ate a death god" <<less

The biggest problem is that he's got a crippling inferiority complex.

He is absolutely certain that he can't defeat the hundred other individuals when they reincarnate, so he tries to put it all behind him and not revenge himself.

Not only is he already aware that this is pointless, as god has it in for him and will screw him over, but it basically removes any and all conflict and tension from the story.

Which makes the character kind of irritating and the story pretty boring as things progress.

This is one of those 10/5 novels that have nearly no flaws at all, and leaves you feeling uber satisfied.

Every single part of this novel (plot, setting, characters, etc.) is a masterpiece, so I won't summarize and just say that this novel is best read with a clean slate. All you need to know is that the heavily abused 'reincarnation', 'revenge' and 'other world' tropes are handled in a most masterful and unique way by this author. So far, this story's plot is in good hands.

The chapters, I must say,... more>> are deceptively long and it will take you some time if you think you can read this in just one session.

The character development is arguably the best I have ever seen. The MC faces many situation that would normally lead to a detached and edgy personality. To my delight, the MC makes correct choices, and is no way some asshole that thinks killing is justified when its bandits or even people who have seriously wronged him. He is always rationally thinking when it comes to these difficult choices, adding to the realism.

Have fun reading! <<less

It definitely isn't bad, the MC is smart and uses logic to solve his problems, he is a bit OP but he doesn't solely rely on his "cheat-like" ability.
But despite all that, I can't help but feel creeped out. I've read many reincarnation novels, so I've started to take into consideration the "ethics" of the story. I mean, doesn't that feel creepy when your child is a reincarnator with memories of more than 20 years of living ?? It's seriously gross when you think about it. And not only... more>> that; in some stories like this one, they are just born out of someone's womb, which is equal to stealing someone's life, the original owner of the body. I can't focus on the story when the mother tries to show her affection on a totally weird baby, no matter how you view it. And besides the story has nothing new, just generic story about reincarnation and levelling up to become OP, the only merit it has is that the writing style and the story are slightly better than the others. <<less

I haven't read JP novels since an ice age ago, in fact the last JP novel I remember reading was Campione! And that was so long ago it must have been at least over 3 years, after which the series was dropped or stopped updating or something. Anyways my point is I just don't bother with JP novels anymore because of the glaring flaws with the MC's and the generic plots, I know I know not every novel is like that, just most of the ones I tried to read,... more>> but anyways this one has caught my attention pretty solidly so I really want to enjoy this one, and so far it has satisfied me, from the novel's story to it's MC to the translations which are of a very good quality in my humble opinion. So here is me hoping against all else for this series to remain as interesting and enjoyable as it has been so far =D <<less
